Gigan 50th Anniversary Project Crowdfunding Campaign Announced

A crowdfunding campaign has been announced to produce a brand new Showa Gigan suit to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Godzilla vs. Gigan.

On March 31, the Official Japanese Godzilla Twitter account announced a crowdfunding campaign for the Gigan 50th Anniversary Project. The purpose of this campaign is to fund the creation of a brand new Gigan suit based on the 1970s design of the character which will be used in a new tokusatsu short film as well as various events and exhibitions. Money collected through the campaign will be used to compensate for the production of the suit and short film as well as the various rewards and their respective shipping costs.

The cyborg monster’s new suit will be modeled by Shinichi Wakasa who has sculpted many suits for Toho’s Godzilla series, including Gigan in the 2004 film Godzilla: Final Wars. Meanwhile, the production of the brand new short film will be directed by Kazuhiro Nakagawa. Nakagawa had previously directed short films for the 2020 and 2021 Godzilla Fest events.

The campaign opened on April 1st and will end after May 31st. There are numerous tiers with different rewards being produced. Reward tiers start at 2,500 yen with backers having the selection of receiving postcards, pins, or acrylic keychains featuring the 50th anniversary Gigan logo. Other rewards include a t-shirt featuring the logo, a Blu-ray that will feature the upcoming short, a special thanks in the credits, and a small scale replica of the suit. At the highest tier is a 30cm X-Plus Gigan figure.
