Toho Announces New Godzilla Film

A new Toho Godzilla film has been announced for a November 3, 2023 release date.


While live at 2022’s Godzilla Fest, on November 3, Japanese actor Shinsuke Kasai announced that Toho was producing a brand new live-action Godzilla film. Kasai declared that the film is directed by Takashi Yamazaki, and will be released to Japanese theatres on November 3, 2023. Despite its 2023 release date, the film is intended to celebrate Godzilla’s upcoming 70th anniversary in 2024. A teaser logo was unveiled with this announcement.

Director Takashi Yamazaki entered the film industry in 1986, working on the special effects for Juzo Itami films such as Sweet Home (1989). Yamazaki made his directorial debut with Juvenile in 2000. He soon became a Japanese Academy Award winner with Always Sunset on Third Street in 2005. A sequel to which even featured a Godzilla cameo.

Previously, in February, rumors began to circulate around a Yamazaki-directed Godzilla film being in production when a casting call was announced for a Toho Kaiju film under his direction. Principal photography began in March and appears to have ended in June. VFX job listings associated with the project also appeared in August. Following the project’s confirmation as a Godzilla project it has also been revealed that in addition to directing, Takashi Yamazaki has also been handling the film’s screenplay and VFX.

The untitled 37th Godzilla film will release to Japanese theatres on November 3, 2023.
