Toei and Bandai revealed an all-new 2023 V-Cinext movie and the Hurricane Gyro Memorial Edition transformation device at the 2022 Tokyo International Film Festival to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger‘s conclusion. A Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club-exclusive spin-off drama will accompany the movie.
A storm of information blew in as returning cast members from Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger took to the stage at the 2022 Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) to perform a transformation pose and roll call together before announcing two 20th anniversary projects for the show. This celebration follows a 20th anniversary festival being held for the series back in September 2022. All three Hurricanegers were able to perform their poses together, though Nao Nagasawa (Nanami Nono/HurricaneBlue) was chosen to join Nobuo Kyo (Isshuu Kasumi/KuwagaRaiger) in performing the Gouraiger transformation and roll call. This is because Yujiro Shirakawa (Ikkou Kasumi/KabutoRaiger) was unable to attend the event. However, he will be featured in the movie.
The main announcement at the event was that, ten years after Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger the Hurricaneger and Gouraiger cast members will return to the silver screen in a new V-Cinext called Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger De Gozaru: Shushutto 20th Anniversary.
Additionally, Bandai revealed via the Super Sentai Toy Official Twitter account (@bandai_sentai) that a new transformation device will join the Gokaigers’ Mobirates and Gokai Cellular, the Ryusoulgers’ Ryusoulken, and others in the premium Memorial Edition line. The Hurricanegers’ Hurricane Gyro Memorial Edition will be coming soon to Premium Bandai. Though no specific information has been provided on the item’s functionality, release window, or price, the teaser image below suggests that the Hurricane Gyro will include the HurricaneRed, HurricaneBlue, and HurricaneYellow Shinobi Medals which would allow the user to act out a “Ninpuu: Shinobi Change” as any of the main three team members. The Gouraigers and Shurikenger use different transformation items.
More information is expected to be on the way, and Team TokuNet will be sure to report on this when that information is made available. In the meanwhile, the above poster for Shushutto 20th Anniversary showcases HurricaneRed’s new form, Oedo HurricaneRed (translation: Great Edo HurricaneRed). The Oedo HurricaneRed Shinobi Medal is confirmed to be included in a special edition of the film’s physical home release, and it will be compatible with the Hurricane Gyro Memorial Edition.
Notably, these announcements arrived the same weekend as similar 20th anniversary project announcements for Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger which had its Dino Brace Memorial Edition transformation device revealed by Bandai just one hour before the account tweeted about the Hurricane Gyro. An Abaranger 20th anniversary V-Cinext was also announced at TIFF 2022 the day after the Hurricaneger event. Both series aired one after another with 2023 being the 20th anniversary both of Hurricaneger‘s conclusion and of Abaranger‘s beginning.
The film takes place in the Edo Period where Ninjas of the Hayate Way and Ninjas of the Ikazuchi Way (played by the Hurricanger and Gouraiger actors, respectively) are met by Oiranda and Aunja of the Seven Dark Spears. The two are after the Ikazuchi ninjas’ ward, Teruhime, because she holds the Tensho Stone which is said to be able to destroy the world. When the Ikazuchi ninjas, Ikkaku (played by Shirakawa) and Ikki (played by Nobuo) think there is nothing more they can do against such formidable foes, the Hurricanegers and Gouraigers suddenly appear from the future and join the fight! What is Oiranda hiding? Fans should prepare to see the transformations of the Edo Period Hurricanegers, complete with topknots!
The trailer below is available on YouTube, courtesy of the Toei Video channel.
The Ninjas of the Hayate Way are Younosuke (played by Yousuke Shiina/HurricaneRed actor Shun Shioya), Nami (played by Nanami Nono/HurricaneBlue actress Nao Nagasawa), and Kotaro (played by Kouta Bitou/HurricaneYellow actor Kohei Yamamoto). The movie is directed by Katsuya Watanabe and written by Keiko Tani. A bonus spin-off drama releasing alongside the movie was also announced as a Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club (TTFC) exclusive. No further details on that drama were given.
Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger De Gozaru: Shushutto 20th Anniversary‘s Edo Period setting explains the “De Gozaru” in the title. This phrasing is a very old way of speaking in Japanese and roughly means “is here.” This could very well be a reference to the core team’s roll call which ends with a proclamation that Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger has arrived. (In Romanized Japanese, “Ah, sanjou!”) The title’s “Shushutto” is a word used as a recurring motif in the original series and roughly translates to “with a swoosh” or “with a swish” or something similar. One potential translation of the title’s latter half might be “The Swooshing 20th Anniversary.”
Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger De Gozaru: Shushutto 20th Anniversary will hit Japanese theaters for a limited release in early Summer, 2023. It will release on Blu-ray and DVD on October 25th, 2023. The regular edition will cost 4,950 yen with tax for the DVD set. Special Features will include a promo (PR) collection, a design gallery, and a digital poster visual. The regular edition Blu-ray will cost 6,600 yen with tax and include the previously mentioned features plus an audio commentary track by the cast.
The Oedo Medal editions will include bonus features as previously detailed plus the inclusion of the Oedo HurricaneRed Shinobi Medal. This will be compatible with the Hurricane Gyro Memorial Edition to access Oedo HurricaneRed’s voice lines. The Oedo Medal editions also include a photo card set. The Oedo Medal edition of the film will cost 11,550 yen including tax for the DVD set and 13,200 yen for the Blu-ray set. Pre-orders for the home release have already gone live.
