TTFC Spinoff “Sabela and Durandal” Announced

Kamen Rider Sabela & Durandal, a spinoff special from Kamen Rider Saber, will premiere on the Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club on November 20, 2022.

Trailer

Angela Mei (Reika Shindai / Kamen Rider Sabela) and Ken Shonozaki (Ryoga Shindai / Kamen Rider Durandal) return to star in the latest Kamen Rider Saber spinoff, Kamen Rider Sabela & Durandal. Reika is set to be married, but what are the circumstances surrounding the marriage? How will Ryoga cope with the thought of his sister being wed?

The spinoff will be directed by Hiroki Kashiwagi, one of the directors on Kamen Rider Saber, and the screenplay will be written by Kaori Kaneko who also wrote the screenplay for an earlier spinoff, Kamen Rider Saber: The Swordsmen Chronicles (Kamen Rider Saber: Kenshi Retsuden). Well-known for his appearances on stage and in musicals, Hiroshi Yazaki will play Rui Mitarai, the groom-to-be. From the TV series’ cast, the Ogami family is set to make an appearance, and Yume Miyamoto (who voices Magine in Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger) will appear live on camera as a restaurant server. The spinoff is scheduled to premiere on the Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club on November 20, 2022.

Synopsis

It’s been a year since the end of the series, and there is talk of Reika getting married to Rui Mitarai, a member of a notable Sword of Logos family on par with the Shindai family. Wishing for his sister’s happiness, Ryoga tells her to put away her sword and to meet with Rui. Reika honors her brother’s wishes and attends the meeting, but she purposefully eats disgracefully to deter Rui. However, he sees through her act. Rui admits that he was also against this marriage in the beginning, but he proposes to Reika because her aim to protect order in the world is similar to his own.

Their marriage is set, and Ryoga continuously frets if this is truly for the best. One week remains until the wedding ceremony when Ryoga receives a phone call from Ren Akamichi…

Remarks from Angela Mei

When we were filming the TV series, I brought up to Ken Shonozaki that I’d like us to star in a spinoff about the Shindai siblings because I wanted a lot of people to know more about them. A lot of thought was put into what information should be conveyed, and I was so happy then I heard that the spinoff was greenlit I was practically bouncing with excitement. This is a story where Reika receives a marriage proposal, so she’ll be in bridal wear in the special. I think you’ll also enjoy her other costume changes while you watch. There were many things we wanted to convey while we were filming: the depths of the siblings’ relationship, Ryoga’s conflict, Reika’s feelings, their relatability. Please watch it when it becomes available. I’d love to know what you all think!

Remarks from Ken Shonozaki

There are a lot of spinoffs in Kamen Rider Saber, and both Angela Mei and I crossed our fingers that the Shindai siblings would get their own spinoff. It’s all thanks to the fans that our wish came true, and I’m so grateful.

In this story, Ryoga is seeing his sister off to be wed, but his feelings, in sync with my own, are in disarray. Of note, when we filmed the scene where Ryoga hears when the wedding will be and Ryoga can’t keep his cool, it took about 20 takes to get right. (nervous laughter) But there was a lot of passion put into that scene, and I think my feelings as a doting brother are genuine.

In Sabela & Durandal, Reika getting married is a major running theme, and you’ll see the Shindai siblings in a new light. And because it’s a Saber spinoff, you can expect it to be full of ska and sword action. Please look forward to it!

Remarks from Hiroshi Yazaki

I play the major role of Rui Mitarai, Reika’s betrothed-to-be. It’s been about 15 years since I was last on a Kamen Rider set, but all of my nervousness went away thanks to Angela Mei, Ken Shonozaki, and all of the staff. Ken and I are close in age, so we had a lot in common we could talk about. It kinda felt like I was on him like an older brother would. (laughs) Please watch and see what develops between Rui and the Shindai siblings.

Remarks from Yume Miyamoto

Nununu! I’m playing a serving girl! I’m on cloud nine being in the Kamen Rider universe this time!

It’s been so long since I’ve done any live filming that my curiosity engine has been rumbling idly, but getting to talk to Angela Mei was really exciting! What surprised me most on set was how much love the staff have for the production. I’m not sure if these made the final cut, but there are a lot of elements of “her” in my costume and items scattered throughout, so please watch this many times, okay? I’m so grateful for such an opportunity as this.
