Interview: Ultraman R/B’s Yuya Hirata

In an exclusive interview, the Tokusatsu Network sat down with Yuya Hirata, known for his role as Katsumi Minato in Ultraman R/B, to talk about the audition process, how similar he is to his character, and more.

What was the audition process like for Ultraman R/B?

When I entered the room, there was a chair positioned right in the center by itself, and in front of it were many staff members sitting down.  I thought to myself, “this really is the Ultraman audition” and at the same time, I became tense knowing I needed to put my heart and soul into this.

How similar or different are you from Katsumi Minato?

We share a lot of similarities. Like him, I become subconsciously absorbed into things whenever I’m passionate about something. We both cherish family and we’re both very straightforward, and so much more. That’s the reason why I fell in love with Katsumi.

Could you tell us how it was like acting alongside Ryosuke Koike as your brother in the show?

It was a lot of fun. He was really easy to be around, or rather we got along so well that it felt like we knew each other way before we started filming for Ultraman R/B.

What was your most memorable moment from working on Ultraman R/B?

I found the prank where we switched the bread Asahi was trying to eat with another kind and showed her bread to her just as she started eating really funny. She really did seem angry so we quickly told her “don’t worry” and that it’s just a prank. By the way, it wasn’t just Isami and me, Ushio was also in on it

On your day off from filming Ultraman R/B, what did you like to do? What are your hobbies?

Filming began early in the morning every day so I prioritized resting my body. I would sleep all day. However, I love movies and games so I refreshed myself through them. I love going to the movies by myself.

How did it feel to be together with the other New Generation heroes in Ultraman Taiga The Movie: New Generation Climax?

During filming, I couldn’t control my excitement because I wondered what kind of movie it would be. Just like the fans who looked forward to the movie’s premiere, I too wanted to see the film immediately. Like “right now!” in the middle of filming. Everyone is a friend who has created Ultraman, I was determined to create something great with them going into this movie as well.

What sort of advice would you give to someone who wants to be an actor?

I have no exact answer, acting is a very difficult thing. But this job where you have to dive into the unknown is very attractive. Believe in yourself no matter what, and continue to improve yourself. I will work hard to do that myself as well.

Is there anything you would like to say to your international fans?

Thank you for always supporting Ultraman. Even if we are far apart like this, your support is reaching me. We only have one life to live. And it belongs to us.

Take what you love about Ultraman, what you’ve gained and learned from Ultraman, and live your life in enjoyment.
