American anime media company FUNimation has acquired the rights to the upcoming Attack on Titan live action movie.

FUNimation has announced it has been granted the rights to the upcoming movie in North, Central, and South American territories. The rights granted include theatrical, home video, and broadcast rights.

The upcoming movie is based on the world and characters from the original manga but will include new ideas and characters, setting it aside from the previous screen adaptation, a 2013 anime. The movie’s script was written by Yuusuke Watanabe (Gantz live action duology, Gatchaman, 20th Century Boys). Shinji Higuchi, best known for his efforts as special effects director in the 1990’s Gamera trilogy and the director for the upcoming Japanese Godzilla reboot, served as director and helped bring the Titans to life via a mix of traditional practical effects and CG animation.

Attack on Titan will premiere on July 14th in Los Angeles ahead of its Japanese premiere date.
