A casting call has been put out for a new Toho kaiju movie being directed by Takashi Yamazaki.
On February 17, Toho and Robot Communications released a casting call for extras to appear in an upcoming Kaiju film. Tentatively titled “Monstrous Monster Movie,” and is directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film is slated to begin shooting from mid-March to June of 2022. Currently, it appears to take place around 1945-1947, during post-war Japan. Filming will primarily occur across areas within the Kanto region of Japan such as Tokyo and Yokohama.
Little else is currently known about the project outside of the promise of substantial VFX usage. However, many online are speculating that this seemingly original monster film, could secretly be the next installment in the Godzilla franchise. Takashi Yamazaki is known for being a Godzilla fan and has officially used the character in his own works. Yamazaki’s 2007 film Always Sunset On Third Street 2 featured Godzilla in a cameo appearance. As recently as 2021, Yamazaki directed the 5-minute Godzilla the Ride short for the Seibuen amusement park. Adding fuel to the fire for many was the casting call’s announcement on the official Japanese Godzilla Store app.
However, as of now, this is all mere speculation. Takashi Yamazaki’s new film begins filming in March, and Japanese readers can apply for extra cast positions through Robot Communications’ website. Applicants must be fully-vaccinated and abide by restrictions on hairstyling and appearance for the shoot.
