Shin Godzilla Tops Japanese Box Office

First Japanese Godzilla film in 12 years tops box office in first week.

Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi’s Shin Godzilla topped the box offices in Japan during its first weekend. The film earned 624,610,700 yen, roughly $6.08 million across 440 screens.

The film earned half of Final Wars, the previous Japanese Godzilla film, overall take within its first weekend alone. Shin Godzilla is also tracking 122% higher than the 2014 American Godzilla film.

Funimation announced that Shin Godzilla, also known as Godzilla: Resurgence, will be released in US theaters later this year. The last Godzilla film to release in Japan was Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004.
