Gintama Live-Action Film Gets North American Theater Release
It has been announced by Azoland Pictures that they will release the Gintama live-action film in theaters across the United States and Canada.
Gintama stars tokusatsu alums Masaki Suda (Philip from Kamen Rider W) as Shinpachi Shimura and Ryo Yoshizawa (Ryusei Sakuta/Kamen Rider Meteor from Kamen Rider Fourze) as Sougo Okita. It opened in theatres in Japan this past July and earned 3.84 billion yen (approximately $34 million). Azoland Pictures plans to release the film, in Japanese with English subtitles, in theaters on January 19, 2018. Ticket sales will be on their website.
Gintama is the story of a former samurai, Gintoki Sakata (played by Shun Oguri) who is forced to lay down his sword when the aliens take over Edo-period Japan. Along the way, as Gin takes on odd jobs to survive, he teams up with Shinpachi and an alien named Kagura (played by Kanna Hashimoto) and often runs into trouble with the Shinsegumi (special police). It began as a manga, created by Hideaki Sorachi and serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine since 2003, and was later adapted into an anime.
As previously reported, in addition to this theatrical release, the movie will also be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in North America on March 6, 2018.
