Chroma Squad Game On Schedule for April 30 Release; Receives Saban’s Support
Behold Studios founder, Saulo Camarotti, announced today that highly anticipated but delayed strategic sentai studio game, Chroma Squad, is on schedule for an April release.
The following is an email sent to their Kickstarter backers:
We’re dealing with the final bugs and some game play improvements before launch. We have tons of backers that are helping us playing the game, and in the forums, looking for all kinds of bugs and improvements that need to be fixed. Thanks to everyone!
As Tokusatsu Network reported last year, Saban’s attorneys contacted Behold Studios about the usage of Saban’s intellectual property. In today’s email, Camarotti took the opportunity to announce that an amicable agreement had been reached with Saban.
The game will not feature any content changes, and will now feature a subtitle: “Chroma Squad: Tactical RPG Inspired by Saban’s Power Rangers.” The email adds that one of Saban’s producers commented, “Chroma Squad is a flattering compliment to MMPR.”
Chroma Squad is 95% complete and in the final stages of development, and should be available on Steam this April 30th.
It has been nominated for the SXSW Gamer’s Voice prize for indie games, and will be shown off by Behold Studios at the SXSW Interactive Expo in Austin, TX on March 12th thru 15th.

Sadly I paid for it way back when it was going to come out in the winter of 2013. Back when I believed it was going to be the game they claimed.
Now it’s half of what was promised, it’s just a basic tactical RPG now, the simulation of the studio is out the window. You can’t simulate anything past a bunch of basics that any other tactical RPG would give you. Heck, you can’t even clothe your Rangers how you want – the items are linked to stats. So if the outfit you like the look of is a shit one, you HAVE to change it to be able to fight stronger bad guys. Defies logic that THAT is how they approached the game. I look forward to playing online with other Ranger teams and seeing each and every one looking the same because that’s the most powerful/useful suit design.
Don’t even need to mention the Saban named tacked to it. The game itself is enough of a thing. Awful stuff.

@fate What’s your problem? It’s not like Saban took over and changed anything about the game itself. The only changes I’ve seen so far have added a subtitle and changed the cover art. That’s it.

They can say ‘nothing was changed’ but the truth remains that a LOT was cut. Two episodes, I believe. Taking it from 8 to 6. That’s a ton of stuff we won’t see. And while it is entirely truthful to say ‘nothing has been changed’, it’s a lie of omission at best, and downright bull at worst.

I also dislike it that the game developer has to credit the power rangers even though that wasn’t his intentions in the first place. what if someone wants to make a sentai fan film that is just purely based on the japanese super sentai series? is saban going to complain about that too?

This is how trademark and copyright law works, I’m afraid. If the majority recognition of ‘Sentai’ in America is Power Rangers, and it is, then they can do stuff like they did here. You can argue until you’re blue in the face that ‘no, toku is a genre and Sentai blahblahblah’ but when it is recogniseably Power Rangers, tough. It’s Power Rangers.
