Discotek Media Announces Additional Slate Of Tokusatsu Blu-ray Releases
Discotek Media has announced additional tokusastu Blu-ray releases with English subtitles, such as Android Kikaider, Special Rescue Police Winspector, Electric Dragon 80,000V and RoboGeisha.
In addition to the announcement of the Blu-ray releases of Kamen Rider V3 and Space Sheriff Shaider, Discotek Media has also announced that popular tokusatsu projects such as Android Kikaider, Special Rescue Police Winspector, Electric Dragon 80,000V and RoboGeisha will also receive Blu-ray releases with English subtitles. These announcements came during Discotek’s Otakon 2024 panel on August 3rd, 2024.
During their livestream, Discotek announced the release of the popular 1972 Toei series Android Kikaider, based on the manga of the same name by manga author Shotaro Ishinomori. The series features the android protagonist Jiro, who fights the evil Professor Gill and the DARK organization to protect the children of his creator. All 43 episodes of the series will be released in HD quality with Japanese and English subtitles. Bonus features include an interview with Jiro/Android Kikaider actor Daisuke Ban, a “making of” featurette, and a vintage recording of an Android Kikaider stage event in Hawaii from when the show originally aired there. Android Kikaider is expected to release on Blu-ray later in 2024.
Discotek also announced the release of the 1990 series Special Rescue Police Winspector, the first of the Rescue Hero shows from the Metal Heroes series. The series focuses on protagonist Ryoma Kagawa and his robotic teammates Bikel and Walter, who form the Winspector team. Together, they take on human and superhuman threats that the regular police force cannot face alone. All 49 episodes will be released with Japanese and English subtitles in standard Blu-ray definition.
Additionally, Discotek announced that the 2001 tokusatsu film Electric Dragon 80,000V will also receive a Blu-ray release. Directed by Gakuryu Ishii, this film features two electricity-wielding vigilantes facing off against each other in the city of Tokyo. Along with English and Japanese subtitles, this Blu-ray also comes with a variety of bonus material, such as production interviews, concept art from the movie, stage greeting footage, and commentary. Electric Dragon 80,000V is expected to release later in 2024.
Lastly, Discotek Media announced that the 2009 science fiction movie RoboGeisha will also receive a Blu-ray release later in 2024. From the team that created Machine Girl and Tokyo Gore Police (2008), this movie focuses on two geisha (traditional Japanese performing artists) who are transformed into deadly cyborgs by an evil steel manufacturer. Along with bonus features and Japanese subtitles, this Blu-ray also includes new English subtitles and the English voice-dubbing of the movie from Funimation.
