Ultraman Marvel Crossover Comic Book Miniseries Announced

A crossover between Ultraman, Ultraseven, Ultraman Taro, and classic Marvel superheroes has been announced at Anime Expo 2022 by series co-writer Mat Groom.

Anime Expo 2022 brought a variety of tokusatsu-related announcements like the official North American physical release of Kamen Rider Kuuga and Chikyu Sentai Fiveman. One of those announcements was made at the Ultraman Arrives: Super Anime Extravaganza event when Mat Groom, co-writer for Marvel Comics Ultraman books and Boom! Studios Power Rangers comics, revealed the next comic book collaboration between Marvel Comics and Tsuburarya Productions. The currently untitled miniseries will be a crossover between classic Ultras and fan favorite Marvel superheroes.

Previously, Marvel Comics published The Rise of Ultraman and The Trials of Ultraman. The third series, The Mystery of Ultraseven will be available in August 2022, making this upcoming crossover series the fourth title in Marvel’s lineup of Ultraman comic books. According to currently released promotional art (pictured above) and a report by Tsuburaya, three classic Ultras will appear alongside popular Marvel heroes to fight kaiju like Bemular and currently unnamed Marvel super villains. The story will include Ultraman, Ultraseven, Ultraman Taro, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel.

According to Tsuburaya Productions, “Fans have been clamoring for a meeting between these unique sets of heroes, and so Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, VP & Executive Editor Tom Brevoort, Transmedia Producer Jeff Gomez and series co-writers Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom have come together to make this happen. The deal was negotiated by Danny Simon of The Licensing Group.”

While details of the story are still unknown, Tsuburaya confirmed that it will take place in the same continuity as the prior three Ultraman comic book series and draw thematic comparisons between the “stoic heroism” of the Giants of Light and Earth’s superheroes. The crossover is expected to release in 2023.

We don’t know yet, but I expect we’ll hear more closer towards the end of this year since the comic is scheduled to start in 2023.

Like Kevin said, we don’t know the title yet. That being said, your comic shop wouldn’t be placing orders for many months anyway. The guys at my local shop have told me orders open around 3 months from release. Not sure if that’s universal among publishers, but stay tuned in the coming months for more coverage about this as the news breaks. When we know the title, we’ll report it as quickly as we can.

Okay. Just wanted to know. Especially to let anyone at the Ultraman fanpage I co-run who asks know, too.
