Thunderbolt Fantasy Gets 3rd Season
A third season of the puppet action series written by Gen Urobuchi is slated for later this year
The puppet fantasy series Thunderbolt Fantasy has announced its third season via the show’s official website. The third season was announced in December 2018 after the finale of the second season. Originally slated to be released in 2020, production on the upcoming season was delayed due to concerns around the spread of COVID-19.
Set as an eastern fantasy, the story of Thunderbolt Fantasy revolves around Dān Fěi and her brother along with a growing cast of characters as they work to protect a sacred sword from those who would try to possess it for their master. Gen Urobuchi, who served as head writer for 2013’s Kamen Rider Gaim, created the series in 2016 and served as chief script supervisor with Hiroyuki Sawano (composer for GARO) on music composition. Both of the previous seasons and the theatrical movie are currently available on Crunchyroll.
The third season of Thunderbolt Fantasy will premiere on April 3 on TOKYO MX and other stations. You can check out the promotional video for the new season below.

There are quite a few things wrong with that plot summary….
To just cover the first half of the first sentence, the plot does not revolve around Dan Fei at all (heck, she only has a brief cameo in season 2), and her brother dies in the first scene of the first episode and is almost never even mentioned again. And “growing cast of characters”… most of the named characters (including every single villain) die over the course of the first season, and only the two ACTUAL main characters stick around to continue to be relevant for season 2.
