Sunshine City to Host Ultraman Festival 2019

The Ultraman Festival celebrating the Giant of Light will return to Ikebukuro this summer.

The Ultraman Festival has been a decades-long tradition in Sunshine City, Ikebukuro meant to celebrate the influential Ultra Series. This year, the beloved festival will return on Friday, July 19th.

Although technically preceded by Ultra Q, the titular Ultraman Festival mainly pays tribute to the series of superheroes kicked off by the 1966 tokusatsu series. Ultraman premiered on July 17th, and the festival’s beginning happens to coincide with that general time in July. This year will be the 29th annual Ultraman Festival, and its theme, “Parents and Children – Each Generation’s Own Ultraman,” is a tribute to the many generations Ultraman spans.

“Each family that gathers at the Ultraman Festival has their own Ultraman that they’ve looked up to. There are equal number of memories and fondness for Ultraman, as there are number of families.”

Tsuburaya also notes that one “must-see spot” is the “Parent And Child Amazing Big Photo Spot,” a giant exhibition featuring Ultraman Taiga and Ultraman Taro, at the festival entrance. Taiga and Taro are known as a parent-and-child Ultraman duo. Additionally, this is the ten-year anniversary of Ultraman Zero’s first appearance, and a special museum exhibition featuring the titular character will be available to see. Finally, the “Ultra Live Stage” will feature a new center stage which allows the seats to become part of the show. Throughout the festival, this show will see Ultra Heroes fighting Ultra Kaiju.

Other bonuses will include an event exclusive gift and various areas to take pictures and be absorbed into the world of Ultraman. The event will be split into two parts with part 1 running from July 19th to August 6th and part 2 running from August 8th to August 26th. August 7th will be used for maintenance. Event hours will be 10 am to 5:30 pm with 5 pm being the last entrance. Finally, the Ultraman Festival will be held in Exhibition Hall B on the fourth floor of the Sunshine Bunka Kaikan building.
