Tokusatsu Actors Find Fame in 2018

Oricon, the leading entertainment and music tracking organization in Japan, surveyed readers on who they thought broke through in 2018.

On the list were various actors including Shison Jun, Yoshizawa Ryo, and Chiba Yudai.

Jun Shison has found success ever since Ressha Sentai ToQger, where he played Right/ToQ#1, ended. He’s appeared in various movies and dramas, including an adaptation of Anohana: The Flower We Saw that Day. In 2018 he found widespread appeal and notoriety in Todome no Kiss, a series that featured Masaki Suda (Phillip in Kamen Rider W).

Yoshizawa Ryo, who played Ryusei/Kamen Rider Meteor in Kamen Rider Fourze gained fame for his roles in the TV special for Gintama 2 as Shogo Okita and Bleach as Uryu Ishida, starring opposite his Kamen Rider Fourze co-star, Sota Fukushi. The actor has already lined up a starring role in the 2019 movie Kingdom, the adaptation of a historical epic manga series by Hara Yasuhisa.

Mackenyu, son of famed martial artist and action actor, Sonny Chiba, who portrayed Eiji Tomari/Kamen Rider Dark Drive, son of series protagonist Shinnosuke Tomari in Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future, was given a major boost thanks to his roles in Pacific Rim: Uprising, Chihayafuru Part 3, and Code Blue the Movie, the movie finale to a popular medical drama.

Rounding out the list is Yudai Chiba, who played Arata/GoseiRed in Tensou Sentai Goseiger. Chiba has had a fairly active career since Goseiger but became more of a household name after appearing in Final Fantasy: Dad of Light, a Netflix original series about a father and son bonding over Final Fantasy, late last year. He has also dabbled in voice acting, having played Ilima in Pokemon: Sun & Moon and Peter Rabbit in the Japanese dub of the 2018 family movie.
