Netflix Announces Pacific Rim Anime
Netflix recently announced that the Pacific Rim franchise will be making the jump to anime.
Netflix held its first ever content showcase in Asia and announced many series coming to Netflix in Asia, including a new anime based on the Pacific Rim franchise. The project is a collaboration between Netflix and Legendary Entertainment. Legendary also produced Gozilla (2014), its upcoming sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Kong: Skull Island.
Below is the official synopsis from The Hollywood Reporter:
“Returning to the epic battle of Kaiju and Jeagers, this original anime series will expand upon the story of the first two live action movies and follow two siblings — an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister — who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents.”
This story differs from the original focus of the film franchise which centered around cadets recruited to pilot large robots called Jaegers in order to combat the Kaiju that were emerging from the Pacific Ocean. The films center around directly combating the Kaiju threat whereas the anime synopsis suggests a different focus. The show will be run by Craig Kyle (Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson (X-Men: Evolution).
