Cosplayer Feature: Dekamexican
Dekamexican is an American based costumer and cosplayer that inspires and breaks the mold with self-sewn suits, and an infectious personality.
What got you interested into cosplay?
I started my cosplay adventures in 2012, my first con being Power Morphicon. After that, I was hooked on going to conventions.
When and how did you discover tokusatsu?
I remember downloading small clips of Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger online when Power Rangers: Dino Thunder was still airing and was like “Wow there’s Power Rangers in Japan!”. Then once YouTube started to become a thing, I looked up pretty much everything Super Sentai, then found a Kamen Rider Den-O music video. I got hooked onto Kamen Rider and the rest is history!
Can you walk us through your process in creating a cosplay?
I first do my research on the character to see what I need to do. Then I choose what I can make and what I need to buy. After that, depending on the build, it can take 10 to 30 hours in making the cosplay–could be less or could be more. An added extra thing I try to do is study how the character is, and at times I get to act like the character while wearing the cosplay.
If you could cosplay any character, who would it be?
If I had to choose from a tokusatsu show, it’d be Kamen Rider Blade King Form.
What is your favorite tokusatsu series and why?
THAT’S SO HARD!!! I want to say it’s a tie between Kamen Rider Den-O and Mahou Sentai Magiranger.
What’s the funniest experience you’ve had while cosplaying?
THAT’S ALSO ANOTHER ONE!! I think it would be when I was cosplaying DekaRed. I had to go to the bathroom and the american actor for SPD Red was there. He helped unzip me and waited outside to zip me up.
What advice would you give to yourself when you first started?
STOP COMPLAINING!!! Don’t comment back to haters, just have fun, don’t be such a baby about stuff, and learn to sew faster so you can save some money!!!
Where can we find your work?
You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and Twitch. I’m usually on Instagram the most and you can see my cosplays, custom cosplay commissions, videos and many more!
Do you have any cosplays you’re currently working on that you’d like to share?
Right now, I’m working on stuff for PMC. I have BoukenRed almost done, a secret cosplay, and my own original Ranger called “Jamminger”. I’m hoping to have the full team for the Jammingers later this year. I’m hoping to get my first Kamen Rider suit, Kamen Rider Faiz, done as well.
