Ultraman Statues Erected in Eiji Tsuburaya’s Hometown

The hometown of Ultraman‘s creator honors him and his work with four new statues.

On March 1st, alongside the street where the legendary Eiji Tsuburaya grew up in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture, city officials unveiled the statues to commemorate the second anniversary of Sukagawa’s sister city-ship with the Land of Light. The plastic statues depict the first Ultras of the franchise, Ultraman and Ultra Seven, and two monsters from their respective series, Gomora and Eleking.

The statues also serve to commemorate the anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake. Mayor Katsuta Hashimoto said, “When the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, we had citizens who helped many others rather than dwell on their own personal disasters. I want our city to be full of such citizens who embody the Ultraman spirit.”
