SHIN ULTRAMAN Movie Announced With Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi
The new theatrical production will aim for a 2021 release
A new collaboration between director Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi was announced in the form of a new movie entitled SHIN ULTRAMAN. The project will be a joint venture between Tsuburaya Productions, Toho Studios, and Studio Khara. Higuchi has been brought on to direct and Anno will produce and write the screenplay. A first draft of the script was submitted back in February of this year. Once Anno has completed his obligations to the upcoming EVANGELION 3.0 + 1.0 movie due out next summer, he will fully commit to the project.
The duo of Anno and Higuchi had previously worked on the Toho released Shin Godzilla (Godzilla: Resurgence in the U.S.) which was met with high praise from critics worldwide. Anno is well known for his love of tokusatsu and Ultraman stemming back to his time making an Ultraman fan film while in college. The story of that time in his life was dramatized in the comedy series Aoi Honno/ Blue Blazes. Higuchi has worked on several Gamera films as well as the live action adaptation of the Attack on Titan manga.
No solid date has been announced for the release of the film, but the press release states SHIN ULTRAMAN will be distributed by Toho in 2021.
