Godzilla Clashes with Evangelion This Summer
Hideaki Anno’s biggest projects collide later this year.
Hideaki Anno is a prolific director best known for his love letter to/deconstruction of old-school anime and tokusatsu, Neon Genesis Evangelion, an anime about a teenager drafted into humanity’s last stand against the show’s unique kaiju, known as Angels. One year ago Anno and Shinji Higuchi signed on to direct the newest Godzilla film, Shin Godzilla (Godzilla Resurgence outside of Japan).
Now these two titans of Japanese pop culture are officially meeting up. A month before the film’s July 29th release, merchandise celebrating the crossover will be available at Groove Garage. The “stomp impact” t-shirts will retail for 4,000 yen, the GojiNerv logo shirts will be 3,000, and the Velcro patches and key rings will cost 1,500. There will also be a limited number of clear files featuring the logo available to the first 55,555 people who preorder the movie tickets starting April 23. The logo reads “Godzilla on the Earth. All’s wrong with the world.” This is a spin on NERV’s actual logo, which says “God’s in his heaven. All’s right with the world.”
