New Power Rangers Movie Clips and Director on Goldar’s Redesign
A new Power Rangers clip surfaced yesterday, giving some insight into the development of Jason and Kimberly’s relationship.
In the last few weeks before Saban’s Power Rangers releases in U.S. movie theaters, Lionsgate has released a few new clips from the movie. In the latest clips posted by JoBlo Movie Clips and Lionsgate Movies on YouTube, Jason and Kimberly are discussing their desire to leave Angel Grove due to some bad experiences. We learn that Jason was the star quarterback at school who failed the team, leaving the people of Angel Grove to resent him.
In the fifty seconds this sneak peek brings us, we also get an idea as to the nature of Jason and Kimberly’s relationship. The two confide in one another, and the chemistry weaved into their playful banter is clear. In Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Kimberly dated Tommy Oliver.
The latest clip is a scene leading up to the rangers’ discovery of the spaceship that houses Zordon and Alpha 5. While parts of this scene were already shown in some of the trailers, this clip gives us a closer look at a more mystical part of the film.
Some of the production decisions have been called into question since the first images of characters from the movie released. Complaints of character redesigns extended to characters such as Alpha 5 and Goldar. Andrew Menzies (Power Rangers production designer) had the following to say:
“Dean [Israelite] and I talked about him being faceless and intimidating and characterless.” “He’s an extension of Rita that’s unstoppable.”
Menzies also mentioned considering the appearance of a chocolate fountain for Goldar’s unsettling appearance. After going on that train of thought, Menzies and Israelite studied how ferrofluid moves which gave them a better idea as to how Goldar should appear.
“There’s something very beautiful about him,” Israelite says. “All of the negative space that’s constantly in Goldar’s design feels very eerie, but on the other hand, he’s a kinetic sculpture.”
A re-imagining of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Saban’s Power Rangers releases on March 24th in the United States and will be also be receiving a Japanese dub for an international release in Japan. The film stars Bryan Cranston as Zordon, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa and Bill Hader as Alpha 5.
