Godzilla 2 Gets New Director and Writer
A new writer and director have signed on to Legendary Pictures‘ Godzilla 2.
Back in May, director Gareth Edwards announced that he would not direct the sequel to 2014’s Godzilla. Legendary Pictures finally filled that void with Michael Dougherty. Dougherty is known for directing horror films like Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus, and writing Bryan Singer’s superhero films, X2 and Superman Returns.
Dougherty will be directing the film, and co-writing with his Krampus partner Zach Shields. Dougherty and Shields are tasked with both creating a sequel to Godzilla, and building a bridge between it and Legendary’s other kaiju property, March 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, in anticipation of Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.
Variety reports that Dougherty and Shields may be the first members of a new writers room at Legendary, tasked with coordinating their shared monster universe in a similar vein to the teams assembled for Transformers.
10/22/2016 UPDATE: Some Hollywood journalists are refuting ScreenCrush’s claim. Supposedly, Dougherty is just co-writing with Shields, and the project doesn’t have a director yet. We’ll let you know as soon as Legendary confirms the story one way or the other.
