Koichi Sakamoto’s 009-1 Now Streaming on Crunchyroll
Sakamoto’s live-action adaptation of 009-1 is the streaming service’s latest tokusatsu acquisition.
Created to celebrate Shotaro Ishinomori’s 75th birthday, 009-1: The End of the Beginning is an espionage/action film based on his 009-1 manga. The 2013 film was directed by fan favorite Koichi Sakamoto, and written by prolific tokusatsu writer Keiichi Hasegawa. Star Mayuko Iwasa is joined onscreen by many familiar faces, including Nao Nagasawa (Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger), Mao Ichimichi (Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger), and Aya Sugimoto (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon).
Crunchyroll’s summary reads,
In the near future, the world is divided into opposing Western and Eastern blocs. J-Country is a border war zone for the ongoing conflict between the two superpowers. Mylene is 009, a beautiful cyborg spy working for the Western block’s “00” division. Her latest assignment is to expose a human trafficking operation and rescue an abducted scientist who created the Faust Project (a covert advanced cyborg technology). Can the one-woman demolition squad accomplish her deadly mission and rescue the human memory of her former self?
The streaming service made the film available to premium members on March 19th. Free users can access it starting on May 1st.
