Trigger To Produce New Denkou Choujin Gridman Anime Short

The next entry in Studio Khara’s Japan Animator Expo series has been revealed to be a new short based on Tsuburaya’s Denkou Choujin Gridman.

Broadcast from 1993-1994, Gridman told the story of a group of computer-savvy kids who build a supercomputer, nicknamed “Junk” that gives them access to the Computer World– another dimension linked to our world’s electronic systems.

When the evil Khan Dejifer launches attacks on the Computer World with intent to rule over the Earth, Junk’s self-made “guardian” is possessed by a Hyper Agent whose mission is to stop him. Joining with one of the children, the Hyper Agent becomes Gridman, who grows to gigantic size to save the day. The series was adapted for American audiences by DIC in 1994 as Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad.

Announced via a trailer on NicoVideo, the short, titled Denkou Choujin Gridman: boys invent great hero, revolves around former series antagonist Takeshi Todo, the human aide to Khan Dejifer. 22 years after the events of the TV series, Takeshi is drawn back into the fray when a monster materializes in the real world. It’s worth noting that the story resembles a plot thread that would have been the basis for the intended sequel to Gridman, Gridman Sigma.

Denkou Choujin Gridman: boys invent great hero will be produced by Trigger, the animation studio behind Kill La Kill and Little Witch Academia. Akira Amemiya (Inferno Cop, Gurren Lagann Parallel Works) will be directing with animation director Yusuke Yoshigaki serving as Character Designer. It will be released online through NicoVideo on January 16th.
