The live-action Gintama 2 film has passed 3.5 billion yen in the Japanese box office.

Gintama 2: Okite wa Yaburu tame ni koso released on August 17th and quickly made 2.5 billion yen (about $22.6 million USD) after 19 days in theaters. Now, the film’s official Twitter account has reported surpassing 3.5 billion yen (about $30.5 million USD) in its 7th week in theaters. The tweet can be viewed below. This earns it the current third place slot in the earnings of Japanese live-action movies for the year.

Gintama 2 is the sequel to the live-action film based on the Gintama manga by Hideaki Sorachi. The story follows the Yorozuya gang as they protect Japan’s shogun when the Shinsengumi police force runs into a crisis. The film stars Masaki Suda (Kamen Rider W’s Phillip) as Shimura Shinpachi and is now playing in Japanese theaters.
