Cosplayer Feature: Navy Cosplay
What got you interested in cosplay?
I first got into cosplay because thrift stores were my second home. I figured out that I could look like those guys on TV, but then I realized armor wasn’t a far-off goal either
When and how did you discover tokusatsu?
I first found tokusatsu in early middle school with Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (Dinosaur Sentai Zyuranger), then worked my way through various Sentai to find Kamen Rider in the Taisen movies.
Can you walk us through your process of creating a cosplay?
After deciding on a character, I draw out a game plan on all I have to do. Then I take a week or so to hand-eye templates on thin cardboard. After that is adjustments and then I trace them onto foam. I cut out my 1/4″ EVA foam with a band saw and shape on a polishing wheel. With paint, hot glue, and more shaping all mixed in, I finish my armor. Then velcro and elastic bring it all together. My undersuits have been sewn by my friend Ivy. She and my friend Bruce yield exceptional help when I need a second opinion on any move I make.
If you could cosplay any character, who would it be?
Genm Dangerous Zombie or Mashin Chaser for sure from the Rider-verse, and Psycho Red from the Ranger-verse. They all have details I dream of achieving someday!
What is your favorite tokusatsu series and why?
Kamen Rider Ex-Aid. The video game theme is something I’ve wanted since middle school, and being mixed with dark and funny tones make it an amazing series. Plus the AMAZING costumes and graphics and the best soundtrack I’ve ever heard. But I don’t believe it’s the best series to clarify.
What’s the funniest experience you’ve had while cosplaying?
I recall winning a full match of the game Ninja at a con, fully geared up in W, which was extremely difficult and did end up with some damage to the cosplay. Totally worth it.
What advice would you give to yourself when you first started?
Work the foam, don’t let it work you. Shape as needed and don’t stress over a deadline.
Do you have any cosplays you’re currently working on that you’d like to share?
Secrets and more secrets, on top of a Build Rider!
