Cosplayer Feature: Moimoi

Talented Japanese cosplayer, Moimoi, gives us an inside look at how making costumes is fun, but also unpredictable.

Why are you interested in cosplay?

I believe that cosplay is the ultimate game of “make-believe.” Becoming characters I like, as well as the heroes I dream about, creating the comrades I like and memories from those shows make for the ultimate hobby!

Can you tell us the series that first introduced you to the world of tokusatsu?

The oldest one I can recollect is Tokusou Robo Janperson. The one I clearly remember watching is Kamen Rider Kuuga!

Can you tell us your methods of creating costumes?

Step 1: Create the pattern (The belt in the center photo is currently in pattern making status)
Step 2: Transfer the pattern onto hard cosplay board
Step 3: Glue each pattern together with bondo
Step 4: I affix leather over it

That’s pretty much it! The photo of the head parts are painted on the cosplay board. Then, I coat the parts with cosplay base, create the foundation, and finally spray paint it.

If you could cosplay anyone, who would it be?

I would cosplay anything and everything!

What is your favorite Tokusatsu Series? Why?

The Kamen Rider series! Within the series, it’s Kamen Rider OOOThe series talks about how everyone has desires in them: sometimes it’s hope, sometimes it’s ambition, sometimes it’s a wish. Desires have many viewpoints, as long as your methods to obtain them aren’t mistaken, will become a serious driving force. It’s that kind of story.

What’s the most interesting story you had in your cosplay experiences so far?

On the day of an event one time, I forgot my spandex suit… I used knee-highs from a 100 Yen Shop as a “cover-up”. I wanted to look cool but both my sleeves and legs were knee-highs (if you look closely at the picture, my skin is showing). It might sound like a good thing to play things by ear, but let’s be careful not to forget things!

If you could go back in time to when you first cosplayed, what kind of suggestions would you give yourself?

Do whatever cosplay you want with no reserves! Quality will follow after! Have fun! Just have fun!

Where can we see your cosplay?

I mainly do things in Kyushuu, but I also attend events in the metropolitan area of Tokyo.  I’ll also be appearing at the Cosplay Summit this year so you can find me there.

Can you tell us what costume you are currently making?

A robot name Strelitzia from Darling in the Franxx (I told you, now I have to make it). It’s the first time I’m making a robot so I’m looking forward to it, but I’m not sure if I can actually make it but nonetheless, please continue to follow me.
