Impossibility Defense Starring Tori Matsuzaka Opens in Theaters

A new feature film, Impossibility Defense, starring Samurai Sentai Shinkenger’s Tori Matsuzaka opened in theaters on February 1st. Matsuzaka stars as Tadashi Utsobuki, a master of the perfect crime.

Based on the manga Funohan by Arata Miyatsuki and Yuya Kanzaki, the live action film is directed by Koji Shiraishi.  A “funohan” is a premeditated criminal act which leaves behind no physical proof, an unsolvable perfect crime. Tadashi Usobuki is able to manipulate people with a mysterious mind-controlling power. His past is shrouded in mystery. His clients leave him notes in phone booths, with who they want killed and why. The victims are found dead from illness, suicide, or accident, with no evidence to point to a killer.

Actress Erika Sawajiri plays detective Tomoko Tada, who seems to be the only person immune to Usobuki’s mind control. While the rest of the police force ready to give up, she continues to work hard to solve the crimes. While the manga has a male detective as the focus character, for the movie it was decided to make the character a female, someone with equally penetrating eyes to Matsuzaka’s.
