Uchu Sentai Kyuranger To Be Developed With American Input

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger, the upcoming installment of the Super Sentai Series, will be developed with American input.

Super Sentai and Power Rangers have been connected since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers first hit the small screen in 1993. But never before has the American side of production had as much influence has they have had with the upcoming 41st installment of the Super Sentai Series.

As noted in his interview with No Pink Spandex, Greg Mitchell, former Senior Director of Marketing for Bandai America says:

We got brought in pretty early on and got to hear what the creative pitch for the show was, which was a space zodiac cosmos type of thing which we get excited about. (Bandai America) got to help at the conceptual stage to think about what could the zords be, what could the weaponry be, what would be the Ranger Key or Dino Charger?

Never before has Bandai America had this opportunity. Previously, they would get a Sentai and have to work around what they have been provided. But with Kyuranger, they have had the ability to influence the designs from the get-go.

The last time a foreign company was involved in the creation of a Super Sentai series was 1979’s Battle Fever J. The series was created under the Marvel brand, although Marvel themselves had little involvement in the production of the actual series.

Mitchell also commented on Marvel as he noted their influential impact in the superhero market in the United States:

Think about Captain America. He used to wear red white and blue spandex. His costume became more cool and tactical looking. He aged up the look of a classic hero. We were constantly bringing up examples like that never to undermine what makes Power Rangers Power Rangers but to say, let us help to form the shape of Power Rangers as respectively as possible to make it competitive as possible in the US.

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger will premiere on February 12, 2017 on TV-Asahi.
